8 Differences Between Your Best Guy Friend And All Other Guys
Started by razorsandroses , 23 Sep Posted 23 Sep I was working today in a restaurant, and 3 people approached my register girls and a guy. As the orders were placed, I told the guy his order would take a little while because our line cook needed to make a fresh batch, and invited for him to be seated and wait. As for the other two girls, I put together their meal. Wir sind nicht zusammen, was ist mit dir los?!?
I understood "freund" to mean a friend, but also to mean a boyfriend DEPENDING on the context it's used in Kind of like Sie can either mean "you" or "her" or "they" Could someone advise me a more appropriate word to use in a case like this to avoid another mishap like this? It would be embarrassing to get fired over a mishap stemming from lack of proper German skills! Thanks in advance. Maybe it's just me, but I'd say the fact that she Du'd you is actually more rude than your innocent mistake.
I'm curious why you didn't simply say "sorry, I'm a foreigner", or something to that effect? I'm sure they would have been more than happy to correct your German You were lucky that you didn't tell boys to bring meal to their boyfriend.
There is also a distinction between eine Freundin von mir a female friend of mine and meine Freundin my girlfriend. But beware because Duden dictionary says that Bekannte -r is also a girl- boy friend in colloquial language. Posted 24 Sep The German's really needed to find new words for boyfriend and girlfriend. This is just too confusing!
If that's what you said, there's no reason for them to be so eingeschnappt. Kollege or Kumpel would be what I use. Bekannter is also possible, but as Yourkeau pointed out, that may very rarely be used by certain people as a cover for "lover" - that's more blue rinse brigade territory though. Other possibility: Is it possible you said something other than what you wrote above? Something that could conceivably have been construed as vaguely rude?
While it does sound like the two of them were spoiling for an opportunity to let their inner b! Third possibility: Were the three of them a group, or did they just happen to come in together, but didn't actually have anything to do with one another? Whatever the Duden writes, it could only very rarely be used as a synonym for "mein Freund" if it the speaker is a woman.
This reminds me of a fauxpas I committed when I was in an English speaking country and referred to my girlfriend as "my friend" because in German "meine Freundin", if the speaker is a man would mean my girlfriend as opposed to "eine Freundin", which would mean a friend after she had introduced herself as my girlfriend.
It took me quite a while to understand why she was so pissed. That said: German is indeed very confusing and unclear with these words. Same with the words Mann and Frau, which mean man and woman as well as husband and wife.
Very confusing! Though I suppose to make it clear you can always add Ehe-. And it's quite interesting to find out how many elderly couples like, even in their 80's live together without being married -- when they were young, this would have been "living in sin" and out of the question!
The reason may be that the woman usually is receiving a widow's pension, which she would lose if she remarried. The reason may be that the woman usually is receiving a widpow's pension, which she would lose if she remarried. There were many widows who wanted to keep their pension and for that raeson moved in with their boyfriends without marrying. My "step-grandmother" and my grandfather were such a couple.
I still mix up "meine Freundin" and "eine Freundin von mir" all the time. My colleagues have gotten used to it by now I suppose, but my girlfriend has threatened to leave me if I keep that up :P.
If the people concerned are obviously a couple or behaving as one , then you might refer to the absent party as die Dame or der Herr. Super corporate places like McDonald's have their employees siezing everybody, but the workers don't seem particularly upset when they are duzed back by a customer, and in any other situation they would probably also be more informal with the person standing across from them.
Most people under 45 do not bother to use the Sie form with anyone else also younger than advanced middle age. That said: I agree with the theory that the girls were looking for an opportunity to let their inner bitch out. While I have been giggled at all the way up to practically laughed out the door for a language mixup or even mispronunciation of an umlaut it doesn't seem a normal or appropriate response from the girls.
It's not much of a thing to get worked up about, even if you did unwittingly suggest they were lovers. No reasonable person need be angry about that, they were just looking for a reason. It depends on the stylistic level. In any context, Begleitung 'company' would be the most neutral, avoiding any assumptions about the relationship between the people.
Kollege , which actually means 'colleague, workmate' is also used to refer to people one is associated with outside work, but is informal. Can also be used as a quite casual form of address for men, when not knowing the name. Kumpel is equally informal, but might be suitable in this context fastfood restaurant, young people. Freund is not an equivalent of friend. It's either a close friend or a partner. Something like "Get out of my face Bitch" would have worked as well. I especially like fick dich ins knie!
